Granite vs. Marble
- Scratch-resistance: Marble can scratch more easily than granite, although this is less of an issue with light-colord marbles.
- Permeability: Unlike granite, polished marble is not the best option for kitchens. A typical marble will etch when exposed to some foods and beverages, for example vinegar, wine and spaghetti sauces.
A honed (non-shiny/matte) marble finish helps reduce the etching action that sometimes occurs with marble in the kitchen. Many homeowners going for a European style are bucking tradition in the U.S. and loving their less-than-pristine marble counters in the kitchen. If you visit southern Italy you will see that they love their marble kitchen coutertops there and don't mind marks or stains. They say it adds character!
